Part 190: Lucky Breaks
Semi-Partial-Omni-Solo Red Mage Part 2: Lucky BreaksNow that I know to actually pay attention to the goblins, climbing the tower is as easy as it is for everyone else.
Now, I could talk about how the Wing Raptor works and what it does.
But it’s the tutorial boss. Who the fuck cares?
Wait, what? Tom?
I know, right? Anyway, I’m planning on walking down the tower because we’ve all learned levels can’t hurt against the next—
: Nope
DAMMIT TOM
In town I buy all the sweet sweet magic, because for right now Red Mage is unbelievably useful. I won’t have to be nearly as reliant on potions as most of the other runs have.
I end up selling my extra broadsword, and all my unneeded equipment. I thought about dualwielding, but it turns out Tom skipped out on ninja training before he could do anything cool.
How not to be stealthy posted:
Pictured: Half-assed ninja training.
So now it was time for the solo run’s first great enemy…
Guys i promise i am good at games
We both know he’d just fall short of protecting them over and over anyway.
I… uh… had it. The whole time. Yes.

So, I wasn’t too worried about the overgrown crawdad. Tom worked at Karl’s Krab Shack for about 4 months, so he knew how to fry seafood. I’m going to at least try the early bosses without fancy abilities first, since early is when the red mage is actually good. Back row to reduce damage, and liberal application of Thunder until death.
Well, fuck. Did I mention he was only part-time?
My max health was around 130. This was the first attack I was able to make. He did 70 damage before I could even move. If I had been in the front row, this fight would have already ended. I did about 160-170 a pop, so I needed 4 hits to kill him.
That HP at the bottom was not from tail screw. I was paralyzed, and he attacked before I could cast cure. I am so lucky.
CMON CMON CMON GAUGE FILL FASTER. Again, no tail screw. He didn’t use it once (thankfully). Just paralyzed me and hit me for 15 damage over and over and over.
YES!
If he had ever used tail screw when I was paralyzed, that would have been game over. But for some reason he never did. I’m not complaining.

So, we lost our dragon-motor, and have to go to the ships graveyard. Now, I could talk about how the random encounters take a major step up here, especially since there isn’t a save point for a while
But we have fire and can one shot all the groups so fuck that.
Did you know there’s a hole you can fall down here? Tom does!
This is the most important thing in the entire ship graveyard. Also Faris is a girl or something.
The world map is in this cabin, but it’s out of the way and Besides, Tom probably wouldn’t even be able to read it right anyway.
So, one more boss to round things out:
code:
NAME: Siren (1st form) HP: 900 ELEMENTAL IMMUNITY: None STATUS IMMUNITY: Toad, Mini, Sleep, Mute ELEMENTAL ABSORB: None CAN'T EVADE: None ELEMENTAL WEAKNESS: None CREATURE TYPE: Human, Heavy IMMUNITY: Control, Catch AI SCRIPT: {Mute,Slow,Haste} {Cure,Ice,Scan} {Armor,Sleep,Bolt} No Interrupt{ Display Text: Changes to an Undead! My first fight did not go well. She slowed me on the first turn, then put me to sleep before my first action came back up. Then she switched to her undead form and could get three action for every one of mine. The fight was over before it even started. Slow clearly seemed to be the worst case scenario.
Second try started much better. Instead of slowing me, she hasted herself. That is much better, because her form change will just remove it.
This is not good at all. I didn’t bother to look up these early bosses beforehand, but I had no idea the Siren could silence. She’s faster than me, which means Potions are only capable of keeping pace with her damage (even in the back row), not giving me an advantage. Compounding that is that I didn’t pick up any antidotes because they’re in a room behind the world map. The poison damage won’t be much, but it will add up. Luckily, about 4 turns later I got my magic back. It meant more couple turns casting Poisona and Cure to get some leeway to use Fire again, but I managed.
Again? Now you’re just trying to piss me off.
And there’s the slow. There is now effectively a time limit on this battle, I cannot act often enough to heal her damage. I have to win on the offense. The problem is that having to keep running damage control between repeated silencing has left me low on MP.
As you can see, this is my last shot. If she doesn’t die here, she’ll kill me before I can recover my MP (and probably before my turn even comes up again because I’m slowed).

TOTAL DEATHS: 2
I may have saved 4 times to make sure. That’s all for now! Next time, romance, politics, and a matador cape!
